Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship with ARCeH

Here’s what the data says: put a pin in Bangkok. Draw a five-hour flight radius around it. You just circled half the world's population. And half of those people are kids under five, an age where survival itself isn't guaranteed. Five isn't an arbitrary number: it's the line researchers use as a proxy for a country's overall health, because almost every preventable childhood death, driven by a bad water source, poor air quality, or an infection nobody caught in time, happens before it. Clear five, and the odds of reaching adulthood jump astronomically. Don't, and the cause almost always traces back to poverty, healthcare access, environmental risk, or nutrition, something that could have been mapped, measured, and prevented in time. That's the gap this externship exists to close: turning scattered, messy public data into a specific, defensible answer about what's actually driving that risk in a given place, and pass it to the people at ARCeH who want to know about it.

Overview

CleanCity is a mobile-based civic technology platform for urban waste management in Cameroon. It allows citizens to report waste and sanitation problems using photos and GPS locations. It addresses poor waste reporting, weak citizen–authority communication, delayed responses, and limited data for municipal planning.

CleanCity

What I've accomplished

CleanCity achieved a functional mobile reporting platform integrated with a Laravel backend and MySQL database. Citizens can submit and track reports, while administrators can manage, prioritise, and monitor cases. The system also implements location-based hotspot analysis and priority scoring to support more informed waste-management decisions.

Overview

The project translated scattered public health datasets into an analysis that identified which measurable factors associate with under-five mortality. The work mapped available indicators, evaluated correlations and limitations of those relationships, and documented where data gaps would affect interpretation.

What I've accomplished

I prepared and validated county-year datasets for PM2.5 and asthma from the CDC tracker, confirming 928 matched rows across 58 counties and 16 years, zero missingness for key variables, and CountyFIPS+Year as the join key.

Project breakdown

Faced with the need for analysis-ready data, I searched, compared two CDC datasets (PM2.5 and asthma), ran a fitness checklist, and joined them on CountyFIPS+Year, producing 928 county-year observations with both exposure and outcome.

I examined two indicator files, confirmed the unit (county-year), recorded 928 rows and 7 columns, located substantive README/methodology documentation bundled with the export, and noted no preprocessing was anticipated.
