In this project, you’ll build your foundation as a product thinker by exploring how AI personalization is shaping digital experiences—starting with the news industry and expanding to platforms like TikTok, Netflix, and Spotify. You’ll be introduced to key frameworks like Jobs To Be Done and Problem–Solution Fit, helping you develop the product mindset you’ll use throughout the externship. This project prepares you to think critically about how personalization works across different products—and how those approaches can be adapted to create more meaningful news experiences.

This project centers on designing and launching a survey to understand how Gen Z users interact with and perceive AI-driven personalization in news. You’ll begin by understanding user research from a product manager’s lens, then you’ll break down the research question using AI tools. Next, you’ll identify your target audience, draft and refine survey questions, and explore methods for effective distribution. Key tasks include setting up a Google Form, defining who your Gen Z respondents are, and pinpointing where to reach them—both online and offline.

I successfully launched the Gen Z survey, monitored response collection, and tackled any issues encountered. I analyzed competing products to understand how AI features drive user engagement and satisfaction, linking these insights to specific product goals.

You’ll begin by analyzing your quantitative data—learning how to identify trends, patterns, and user preferences using both manual and AI-supported techniques. Next, you’ll dive into qualitative responses to uncover underlying motivations and emotions behind user behavior. Throughout the process, you’ll learn how to visualize your findings using tools like Google Sheets and enhance your analysis using AI. By the end, you’ll have a rich, data-backed understanding of what Gen Z values in personalized news experiences.

I crafted a visual story addressing a specific business challenge by breaking down a real-world scenario. Using metaphor and careful design, I created a one-page Canva slide that communicated the issue effectively, engaging decision-makers and prompting action.

You’ve just begun thinking critically and strategically about how to communicate important business ideas. You’ve already stretched your creative muscle by visualizing concepts in out-of-the-box ways—and this project will stretch it even further. In this project, you’ll practice using a tool that turns data into stories . How clearly that story comes through depends entirely on how well you’re able to leverage the tool’s capabilities. As mentioned earlier, this is a muscle built over time —not overnight. Right now, the most important thing is simply to get comfortable using the tool. Let’s start there.
