The externship explored building an AI-powered document insights prototype that combined OCR, large language models, and retrieval-augmented generation to process enterprise PDF workflows. Work included researching model behavior, designing extraction approaches, and integrating retrieval for contextual answers.

I reviewed a multi-page pharmaceutical document and documented specific OCR and parsing obstacles, including inconsistent date formats, mixed layouts, tables and charts, and variable font and scan quality.
I reviewed a multi-page pharmaceutical document, noted inconsistent date formats, mixed layouts, tables and charts, and variable font/scan quality. I documented how these issues could disrupt OCR and downstream NLP parsing and extraction.
The module required cleaning CSVs, flattening nested JSON, standardizing messy text, and preprocessing a scanned image. I ran these tasks in Google Colab, produced cleaned dataframes and a processed high-contrast image ready for OCR.
