Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Visualization

A six-week externship with the Center for Improving Youth Justice focused on turning youth justice datasets into publication-ready visual stories using Flourish and Canva.

DesignVisual Data StorytellingStrategic Communication

Overview

As a Data Visualization Extern for the Center for Improving Youth Justice, I analyzed performance data from 85 juvenile justice facilities to investigate whether isolating youth for misconduct reduces behavioral problems. Using Flourish and Canva, I built a visual data story, "The Isolation Paradox", presenting several charts to surface the relationship between isolation use and misconduct rates.

Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Visualization

What I've accomplished

I identified that high-isolation facilities had disproportionately higher misconduct rates than low-isolation facilities, while facilities with minimal isolation use showed stronger family/staff relationships and higher perceived fairness among youth. I compiled these findings into a slide presentation with data-backed recommendations to shift discipline practices away from isolation.

Designing MySQL Relational Database for a small business.

What I've accomplished

Designed and developed a normalized MySQL relational database for a community food drive volunteer management system. Created tables, primary and foreign key relationships, ER diagrams, SQL queries, views, KPIs, triggers, and stored procedures to support volunteer coordination, event management, inventory, donations, and resource distribution.

Outcome

Developed a normalized MySQL database that streamlined volunteer, event, donation, inventory, and resource tracking while supporting data-driven reporting and decision-making.
