An HP Tech Ventures externship on deal sourcing and startup analysis, focused on methods for discovering, researching, and evaluating early-stage tech startups.
The externship taught deal sourcing and startup evaluation techniques used by venture investors. The work covered how to interpret an investment thesis, apply search methods to identify candidate startups, and document findings for deeper diligence. Deliverables included a set of sourced startups and an analysis ready for further vetting.
I shortlisted three startups that matched the investment thesis and compiled a due-diligence spreadsheet capturing funding, team size, industry, headquarters, and short descriptions for each.

Build real-world skills essential for careers in finance, equity research, and investment banking.
The externship placed me in a value investing workflow mentored by Yinan Zhao, covering financial modeling in Excel, interpretation of alternative data, and sector trend analysis. The work included hands-on stock analysis and model-driven valuation exercises guided by the externship materials.
I compiled three years of historical statements, translated key drivers into formulas, and built a fully linked 5-year income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow projection. The model produced forecasted financials and supporting driver logic.

Conducted a comprehensive corporate finance analysis of Johnson & Johnson using 2014–2024 financial data from SEC 10-K filings and market sources. Analyzed profitability, liquidity, capital structure, and shareholder payouts before developing forecasts and valuation assumptions based on historical performance.
Built an Excel valuation model using CAPM, Gordon Growth, and payout-based approaches to estimate cost of equity and WACC. Forecasted income statements, balance sheets, and free cash flows, then applied a DCF model, comparable-company multiples, sensitivity analysis, and Monte Carlo simulation.
The DCF model produced an implied share price of approximately $261.67 compared with J&J’s $142 market price at the time of analysis. Sensitivity and Monte Carlo analysis tested valuation risk, while peer comparisons with Pfizer, Merck, and Bristol Myers Squibb supported the overall investment assessment.
