Overview

The externship examined how a social app like BeReal balances authenticity and growth by benchmarking competitors, mapping user flows, and designing a new feature. The work produced a five-stage end-to-end user journey map, a competitor feature audit linking mechanics to retention with cited notes and metrics, a PRD-lite, a clickable Canva prototype for Real Together, and a focus-group test with

BeReal Product Management Externship

What I've accomplished

I delivered a five-stage user journey with recorded actions, thoughts, and feelings; a feature-audit table linking competitor mechanics to engagement with cited usage notes and metrics; a PRD-lite and clickable Canva prototype for Real Together; and a 38-minute focus group yielding verbatim reactions and a clear finding about proof versus pressure.

Project breakdown

During the module I mapped a five-stage BeReal user journey (Onboarding, Prompt, Exploration, Creation, Posting). I recorded what users did, thought, and felt at each step and captured specific frictions like confusion at first capture and ideas like adding music.

I audited BeReal’s core features, described their mechanics and retention links (notifications, post-to-view gating, Discovery tab), and produced a feature table showing how each item drove engagement with cited usage notes and metrics.

During the module I defined Real Together, wrote a PRD-lite, mapped user flows, scored ideas with RICE, and built a clickable Canva prototype showing tagged friends' posts auto-stitching into a single "together" card and the waiting/failure states.

I designed and ran a 38-minute virtual focus group plan for seven participants, prespecified decision rules, and tested four learning goals. The session produced verbatim reactions, a written survey, and a clear finding about proof versus pressure.
