A value-investing externship focused on stock selection and financial-modeling workflows applied to the Russell 2000 Value index.
I gained hands-on experience in value investing by collaborating with seasoned investor Yinan Zhao. Through comprehensive analysis of the Russell 2000 Value index, I developed key skills in financial modeling, data interpretation, and crafting investment recommendations, which are essential for a successful career in finance and equity research.
I produced a Stock Card and linked analyses that documented AI-assisted research methods, a 10-K review distinguishing key versus boilerplate items, earnings-call sentiment, competitor mapping, and a mapped set of downside risks and potential catalysts.
I chose Avis Budget Group (CAR) as my pick, compiled an analyst-style Stock Card and set a price target of 205. The submission included a shared analysis link that documented the rationale and figures used to support the target.
I located the company 10-K, parsed the Business Overview and Risk/MD&A sections, and populated a shared spreadsheet with extracted qualitative insights and annotated notes. The deliverable was a completed analysis spreadsheet.
During the externship I compiled a locked qualitative research template for Avis Budget Group, synthesizing press releases, earnings-call notes, competitor lists, timeline entries, risks (fleet costs, debt, seasonality) and potential catalysts into a single spreadsheet deliverable.
The work reviewed 10-Ks, built a historical three-statement Excel model with aligned years, fixed data misalignment, and produced a reconciled model showing historical revenue, margins, balance sheet, and cash flow lines.
The project summarized company research, set projection drivers, and produced a fully linked 5-year forecast across income statement, balance sheet, and cash flows. The model traced key driver formulas and produced forecasted financials for valuation use.
