National Geographic Society & The Nature Conservancy Freshwater and Community Conservation Externship

Overview

In this externship program, students will learn strategic consulting skills to analyze and evaluate challenges from non-profit organizations using consulting frameworks, in an overall effort to help them solve their important problems. Selected individuals will be paired with a specific non-profit organization and dive into their strategic problems, such as development, impact assessment, process improvements, talent engagement, communication, and strategic positioning. Throughout this externship program, professionals from PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) will provide mentorship and coaching.

The Experience

Learn about the strategy consulting process and how to help create value for a non-profit client based on their vision and mission
Research and develop an understanding of a given field
Analyze complex problems ranging from fundraising and development, stakeholder management, impact measurement, as well as use consulting frameworks to help identify problem areas and propose solutions
Learn to gather, analyze, and visualize data to inform problem areas and possible solutions
Create and deliver a compelling presentation to a non-profit client that incorporates valuable insights, trends, and recommendations

Qualifications

Ambitious undergraduate students with an interest in consulting, strategy, and non-profits. This program is for students who would like to understand the consulting profession while generating ideas to help impact non-profit organizations.

Overview

Freshwater is vital for life on Earth, for people, species, and places across the natural world. Yet, in many places around the globe, our management of freshwater resources is becoming unsustainable. Understanding the interconnectedness and complexity of local and regional freshwater issues is critical to living sustainably on Earth.

In this remote Externship, externs will translate global freshwater conservation issues into a local context, make them relevant and accessible to their communities, and offer solutions to local or regional problems.

The Experience

Throughout the Externship, you will learn about freshwater conservation careers from weekly webinars featuring National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy experts, your own research, and informational interviews conducted with local conservation organizations.

During this Externship, you will:

Learn the basics of various freshwater conservation issues and approaches through resources and case studies provided by the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy;
Learn and apply primary and secondary research methods to investigate ongoing conservation efforts and identify freshwater conservation issues in your local area or region;
Speak to local leaders, conservationists, and community members to gain an understanding of freshwater issues and their impact on the local community;
Conduct a landscape/gap analysis to identify gaps in freshwater conservation efforts in your area and propose solutions to issues you may uncover;
Gain skills in written and visual storytelling to communicate freshwater issues and how your community can help.

Qualifications

We are seeking young people ages 18-25 from around the globe interested in learning about introductory conservation approaches and exploring a career in conservation. No prior work experience or coursework in conservation or environmental topics is required. Individuals from locations impacted by freshwater conservation issues are strongly encouraged to apply. We are committed to selecting a cohort of young people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

Part-time and fully remote

This Externship is a 10-hour-per-week fully remote experience where all meetings and events are recorded.

Externship starts February 12, 2024

This remote Externship will last 8 weeks.

$500 Stipend

Students who successfully complete their externships will receive their educational stipends at the end of the program.
