Whether you’re exploring your first Externship or prepping for that dream summer internship, these insights can give you the edge you need. Extern recently hosted Dr. Jordan Lance Umstead, AT&T’s Internship Program Manager, in our #RealTalk webinar, where he shared top tips to secure and succeed in some of the most sought-after internship programs in corporate America.

1. Understand the Company’s Mission and Align Your Goals

Dr. J emphasized that interns who truly understand AT&T’s mission and connect their goals to the company’s vision tend to thrive. Tip: Before applying, research the company’s strategic priorities and think about how your skills and career aspirations align.

2. Highlight Transferable Skills, Not Just Grades

While academic performance matters, it’s often your extracurriculars, part-time jobs, or projects that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. “We look for action-oriented individuals,” Dr. J said. So, focus on transferable skills in your application.

3. Be Clear About Your Impact

During the webinar, Dr. J noted that the most memorable applications are those where candidates highlight measurable achievements. Did you lead a group project that increased efficiency? Quantify it. Use numbers and data wherever possible to showcase results.

4. Show Curiosity and a Growth Mindset

One of Dr. J’s favorite interview questions? “Tell me about a time when you didn’t know how to do something, and how you figured it out.” Demonstrating curiosity and the ability to learn on the fly can make you stand out.

5. Master the STAR Method for Interviews

Dr. J emphasized the importance of structured answers during interviews. The STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method helps you stay concise while showing the interviewer how you’ve navigated challenges and delivered outcomes.

6. Network with a Purpose

Building relationships can help you learn about internship opportunities early. Dr. J advises reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn, attending networking events, and being authentic in your communication. “Don’t just ask for something—build genuine connections.”

7. Polish Your Virtual Presence

“In today’s hiring environment, your LinkedIn profile is your first impression,” Dr. J shared. Make sure your profile photo is professional, your headline highlights your strengths, and your achievements are clearly listed.

8. Prioritize Communication Skills

Strong communicators excel in internships. Dr. J advised students to practice presenting ideas clearly, whether in meetings or emails. Pro Tip: Practice pitching a project idea in under two minutes to improve both clarity and confidence.

9. Adaptability is Key

At Fortune 20 companies like AT&T, change is constant. Dr. J said they value candidates who can adapt quickly to new challenges. Emphasize experiences where you pivoted successfully under pressure.

10. Follow Up and Show Gratitude

A simple thank-you note after an interview can set you apart. Dr. J mentioned, “Gratitude isn’t just good manners—it shows your professionalism and attention to detail.”
